According to the monarch, the official residence of the British kings does not meet modern challenges.
The new king of Great Britain Charles III and his wife Camilla do not want to move to the official residence of the monarchs – Buckingham Palace. And it’s not just the ongoing renovation of the building, which will drag on until 2027, but also the fact that, according to the royal couple, it is not suitable for modern life, and its content is “not sustainable”, writes The Sunday Times.
The king and queen consort want to stay at their favorite residence, Clarence House, where they have lived for 19 years. According to insiders, the Prince of Wales shares his father’s opinion. So it is likely that the king will conduct business in Buckingham Palace, but Clarence House will remain his de facto home.
According to the latest plans, Buckingham Palace was to become the headquarters of the royal family, and the king’s team should work from there.
Now the building is undergoing the most extensive reconstruction in the last 70 years. Its cost is estimated at 370 million pounds. The renovations are funded by taxpayers and are unlikely to be completed before 2027.
Last year, the media reported that the then Prince Charles planned to open the royal palaces when he became king, and turn them from “private spaces into public spaces.” Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Balmoral, Sandringham and Clarence House will remain royal houses but will have greater public access under plans. Queen Elizabeth II, who died on September 8 this year, was also involved in these discussions.
Recall that Charles III plans to change the Regency Law. Thus, the monarch intends to exclude some of his relatives from the number of possible successors.
